TASMANIA – We stayed three nights in DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart, rated 4.5 stars. Here’s our honest, no-holds-barred review of our stay in Hobart, Tasmania.

🏨 Check-in & Hilton Honors perks

When you have had a long, tiring driving day, it certainly feels good to check-in and set your bags down as soon as possible. Staff was stationed outside the hotel who helped us secure a temporary lot at the lobby entrance and assisted with unloading our luggages. As a Hiltons Honors member, it was a joy to be attended to immediately upon arrival thanks to the dedicated priority check-in counter.

Of course, we were treated to its very delicious Doubletree’s signature cookies. What a sweet gesture.

🚗 Parking challenges – What you need to know

Pity about the parking. Space is extremely limited, especially in the city. We were informed that parking, even if we wished to fork out the parking fees of AU$35 a day at Hilton Hobart, was subject to availability, even as Honors members.

Public parking lots are available nearby but that would entail not just an additional few more minutes of walking, dreadful should it start raining. But most importantly, the safety aspect would bring about a load of worries. Luckily for us, we managed to secure parking for the next three nights at the hotel itself.

On-site EV-charging is available for those with electric vehicles.

Tip: Always seek alternatives before arriving. Find out the exact location of the nearest public parking should the hotel parking be full.
Tip: Be extra cautious when entering the windy carpark. Go slow and enter from the main entrance, not the lobby for a better driving angle. We lightly grazed the sideview mirror, twice, while negotiating the sharp bend towards Hilton’s carpark.

🛏️ Room & comfort – What to expect

A cosy hotel room with a spacious bed.
The room with a king-sized bed and partial view of mountains.

Clean, spacious and bright, the non-smoking hotel room had all that is expected of a Hilton room. The carpets were new and clean, as with the curtains and windows.

There was also a compact round table with comfortable chairs to work in or to lay down your daily essentials. The air-conditioning temperature was adjustable as well.

Big spacious king-sized beds at Hilton is something I was eagerly looking forward to, having had a wonderful experience with their ultra-comfortable bed in Fukuoka years back. The bed did not disappoint.

The room comes complete with a TV and partial view of the mountains.

The bathroom & the mirror location

I love it when the bathroom is spacious, and comes with quality skincare and toiletries waiting for guests to enjoy. We were pleased with the hotel’s Crabtree & Evelyn Shampoo, Conditioner and Shower Gel. The provision of body lotion would have been the icing on the cake. The bathroom also comes with a long ledge to place my toiletries and makeup, without getting them all wet while washing the hands – a detail not to be taken for granted.

Other amenities such as a rain shower, hand-held shower head and fluffy towels and hand towels have become necessities that are to be expected of a 4.5-star hotel such as Hilton.

What could have been better: The mirror situation

The biggest question to the hotel management: Why is the full-length mirror installed in the toilet, and only accessible behind a fully-closed door? Situated adjacent to the bathroom door, it made it extremely inconvenient for guests when we wanted to have a final check of our OOTD right before heading out. The location of the mirror also made it troublesome when my partner was using the bathroom.

Since the bathroom already has a big landscape mirror stretching from one end to the other, would it have made more sense for the full-length mirror to be installed outside the bathroom, without getting it all misted up? Plus, does the hotel expect guests to step into the wet bathroom with their shoes?

An additional mirror outside the bathroom would allow for more space when preparing for the day. A quick outfit check (with shoes on) before you leave the room also makes more sense to me.

On-site workout and R&R facilities

One of the biggest plus for us, when checking into a city hotel is taking a dip in its heated pool. DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart comes with a 15-metre colour-changing pool, a sauna steam room and a fully-equipped fitness centre. Space is a luxury but these three facilities, albeit compact, offer the traveller a space to rest and relax amidst the hustle and bustle of city living.

🍳 Breakfast at Hilton Hobart – Is it worth paying for?

Breakfasts are especially important to me and my partner. We love to explore the local delights via a hotel’s wide offering. Hilton Hobart’s breakfast is served at the Leatherwood Bar & Kitchen. Touted as a modern Australian restaurant showcasing Tasmania’s fresh seasonal produce, I had high expectations as to what Hilton Hobart would provide in their breakfast buffet menu, especially with Tasmania’s gastronomic halo.

The breakfast buffet spread has all the trappings of what a 4.5-star hotel buffet should be: an omelette station, grinded coffee and hot tea, hot food and cold cuts, toast and cereal corner with a wide variety of Australian nuts, grains and milk (they even offer soy milk).

To be perfectly honest, the breakfast did not impress me, nor did the taste of the machine-grinded coffee. The omelette – a gauge if the hot food selection is decent – was at best passable. It was served with friendly smiles though.

Even though Tasmania was known for its seafood, its seafood selection was very limited. There was no dish that stood out during the three days and dish rotation was minimal. Having tasted extremely memorable great tasting food inTasmania, this came as a huge disappointment. The pastries were the saving grace, as with the dairy alternatives.

Service was excellent even with rotating staff over the three mornings we had breakfast there. Taste-wise, there was nothing to shout about in terms of its freshness or quality – something that left me a tad disappointed having had a great dining experience tucking into local delights at Hilton Fukuoka. The gap was, however, compensated by the spread at the breakfast buffet.

If breakfast is a big deal to you, you are better off exploring local cafes.

What could have been better: Payment confusion

On our second breakfast day, we were surprised to be informed that we have yet to make payment for breakfast for the second guest in the room. We were well-aware that breakfast comes at an extra cost of AU$25 per person when booking the room, which we gladly selected. A booking error meant that we only paid for one pax. We diligently made payment for the first day’s breakfast and subsequent two days of breakfast.

I wonder how this detail was missed out during our priority check-in with the receptionist confirming that we have booked breakfasts for all of our 3-night stay. It doesn’t make sense for only one person to make payment for breakfast in a room of two, doesn’t it?

📍 Nearby attractions – Salamanca Market & more

A main draw when headed to Hobart is visiting the over 300 stalls at Salamanca Market. With the attraction a mere 700 metres away, the proximity was a big reason we chose this hotel. Without driving our rental car, it was a pleasant 9 minutes walk to the local market thriving with local produce, organic food items, handmade knick knacks and specialty liquors, wines and even homemade whisky. We even ate fresh oysters, lobster rolls and sampled beef jerky, cheeses, honey, jams and whisky, as well as partake in live music.

Tip: Salamanca Market is held at Salamanca Place, opens every Saturday from 8.30 am to 3 pm. Be sure to give yourself at least three hours to immerse in the festivities of this weekly market.

The harbour was also within easy walking distance, with other cafes and restaurants near the hotel. See below for a list of fun activities and must-go attractions in Hobart.

Would we stay at Hilton Hobart again?

DoubleTree by Hilton Hobart. IMAGE: Hilton

Pros:

i. Friendly, amiable and professional service staff.

ii. Spacious, clean and new rooms with comfortable bedding and quality amenities.

iii. Indoor, heated pool with steam sauna and gym facilities.

iv.Close to attractions such as the Saturday Salamanca Market and other top attractions such as the harbour.

Cons:

i. Breakfast was underwhelming, despite its wide selection.

ii. Very limited parking availability, even for Hilton Honors members.

Should breakfast quality and on-site parking be deal-breakers as to us, you may wish to consider other Hobart accommodations. But, if familiar comforts, good service and proximity to attractions are what you are looking for, Hilton Hobart is a solid choice.
